BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches

  • 2 20 oz cans jackfruit , in brine or water
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp pink salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp avocado oil optional
  • 1 tsp liquid smoke optional
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce  divided
  • 1/4 cup water

Broccoli Slaw:

  •  1 12 oz bag of broccoli slaw
  •  1/2 cup vegan mayo
  •  1 tbs vinegar , white, apple cider or coconut
  •  1-2  tbs sugar
  •  1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  •  1/4 tsp salt


  • Burger Buns
  • Vegan mayo
  • Leafy greens
  • Hot sauce
  • Pickles or other pickled veggies


  1. Drain and rinse the canned jackfruit. Optional: cut off the core.
  2. In a large bowl whisk together the spices: smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, pepper and salt. Add the jackfruit and toss until throughly coated in spices.

  3. Heat a pan over medium heat. Add oil. Once hot, add the jackfruit. Cook for about 3 minutes until jackfruit begins to yellow.

  4. Flip jackfruit and pour 1/2 cup of BBQ sauce mixed with 1/4 cup water overtop, liquid smoke if using and and give a gentle stir. Adjust heat to medium-low. Cover and let simmer for about 20 minutes.

  5. While the jackfruit simmers make your broccoli slaw by whisking together mayo, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper. Toss with the broccoli slaw and set aside.

  6. Once jackfruit is done shred with 2 forks. Then add the other 1/2 cup of BBQ sauce and cook for a few minutes more.

  7. Remove the jackfruit from heat and assemble your sandwich. Spread bun with any condiments, layer BBQ jackfruit, extra BBQ sauce, slaw and any other desired toppings like greens or pickled veggies and enjoy!

Recipe Notes

If you are looking to give this recipe a boost of protein, sub out 1 can of the jackfruit for whole or mashed lentils (or another bean/legume of choice).
